"De Uniek" by Andrei Pacea

“I was inspired by the building’s turbulent history of being built on the Coolsingel, destroyed during the war, and later reconstructed on the Kruiskade. To me, this cycle of destruction and rebirth serves as a powerful metaphor for the LGBTQ+ community. Just as De Unie was once criticized by the public for being “too much” or too radical for its surroundings, the queer community today continues to face political attacks and attempts to push it out of the spotlight.

By reimagining the building’s bold De Stijl looks as a space for celebration, I tried to highlight how queer identity refuses to fade away. Despite the hate, the community remains an essential and unerasable part of the city. It is this stubborn persistence
that makes Rotterdam a way more interesting and colorful place to live in.“

Andrei Pacea (b. 2001, RO) is a visual artist with a focus on drawing. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Illustration from the Willem de Kooning Academy in early 2025. His practice is a direct extension of his daily fascinations—friends, dreams, objects, books, trips, buildings, gestures, and the work of other artists. Drawing is a daily ritual for Andrei, through which he observes, records, reflects, and escapes. For him, the act of creation is a form of information processing: a way to make sense of the overwhelmingly complex world we live in.
