"Melly Shum Hates Her Work" by Enric Adell

Melly Shum sits at her office desk and takes a brief moment out of her work duties to look at us with a timid smile. Melly Shum Hates Her Work. This illustration is based on the artwork by Canadian artist Ken Lum that, since 1990, has been visible on the façade of the building on the corner of Boomgaardstraat and Witte de Withstraat. The building houses the former Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, which changed its name to Kunstinstituut MELLY in 2019, also in honor of Lum’s artwork.
I was mesmerized by this mundane yet mysterious scene of Melly Shum’s workplace and its juxtaposition with the bold lettering next to it, which, to me, raises questions about workplace alienation and anti-capitalism.”
