De Rotterdammer #31

"Wandelen met m’n plantje" by Paula Esteve

“On the cover, I’m walking along the Westersingel —a place you often find yourself in when you’re just getting to know the city. To mark the one-year anniversary of De Rotterdammer, I was invited to recreate the cover of Issue No. 1 in my own style. La grande musicienne is an early Cubist sculpture by Henri Laurens. She represents a woman playing a lyre, though the first time I saw it, I kept circling around it to understand it. I enjoy the strong, empowered feminine energy while she’s creating something harmonic with the instrument. Laurens made the original plaster in 1938; the bronze version, part of Rotterdam’s sculpture terrace, was cast in 1963.”
