De Rotterdammer #29
"De nachtburgemeester" by Floor de Bie
"A tribute to one of the most iconic Rotterdammers: Jules Deelder. Poet, writer and performer, he was known for his raw style, love for jazz and distinctive appearance: black suit, iconic glasses, and slicked-back hair. He was called ‘the night mayor of Rotterdam’ and he possessed an unmistakable Rotterdam accent. He passed away in 2019 but his poems can still be found on several buildings throughout the city. He wrote about city life, death, drugs, and music in blunt language, reflecting the tough, no-nonsense spirit of Rotterdam.
I captured him in watercolour, with verses of one of his poems. "
Floor de Bie is a documentary maker turned Dutch teacher, with a love for watercolour. She discovered watercolour painting when she ended up with Long Covid a few years ago. Looking for an activity that was not so demanding for the brain, she started painting fruit, vegetables and random objects from her house. She fell in love with the transparency and unpredictability of the medium: you never really know what the paint will do.
