"Built Contrasts" by Hannah Kansy

"While walking around Rotterdam, there are moments when you can’t help but notice the striking architectural contrasts. This illustration focuses on that very contrast, which, to me, captures the essence of the city. In the foreground, you see an old traditional Dutch building with all its intricate details. In the background, a glass and steel tower rises, its form following a strict grid. I wanted to portray this built contrast and highlight the interplay between old and new architectural styles."

Hannah Kansy is a graphic designer, illustrator, and printmaker based in Rotterdam. Her work spans the design of visual identities, publications, posters, and websites primarily for clients in the cultural sector as well as the exploration of diverse illustration styles and printmaking techniques. A defining aspect of her illustration practice is the integration of analogue printmaking methods, particularly screen and risograph printing. She is especially interested in the intersection between digital drawings and the unpredictability inherent in printmaking, often combining these elements to explore the balance between precision and spontaneity.
