De Rotterdammer #24
"Insectendorp" by Lauren Grobbelaar
"Insectendorp is inspired by the bumblebee homes found in the Trompenburg Botanical Gardens. The miniature clay houses are based on actual old Rotterdam buildings. I chose to illustrate them because they perfectly represent one of my favourite aspects of Rotterdam: the city’s respect for nature. Coming from a country known for its natural beauty, it has always struck me how South African cities often lack green spaces. It feels very special to live in a city that makes space for nature and animals."
Lauren Grobbelaar is an illustrator and UX/UI designer originally from South Africa. She moved to the Netherlands at the end of 2024 and now lives just outside of Rotterdam. She loves animals, especially the weird-looking ones, and her work often features nature and animals. She has a passion for all things fun, whimsical, and colourful, and hopes her work can bring a little more joy into the world and make someone smile.
