"Maastunnel" by Andrei Pacea
"I live in Nieuwe Westen, and my studio is in the C3 building in Charlois. When I commute, the easiest route is through the Maastunnel. This complex piece of infrastructure has always fascinated me from the access buildings with their quirky shapes and beautiful tilework to the tunnel itself, which feels like an endless, liminal tube. As I bike under the river, I often imagine the world moving above and around me: boat traffic, fish, trash, and forgotten treasures drifting through the water. This drawing is a direct manifestation of those thoughts what my imagination gives me as I speed through the tunnel."
Andrei Pacea (b. 2001, RO) is a visual artist with a focus on drawing. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Illustration from the Willem de Kooning Academy in early 2025. His practice is a direct extension of his daily fascinations—friends, dreams, objects, books, trips, buildings, gestures, and the work of other artists. Drawing is a daily ritual for Andrei, through which he observes, records, reflects, and escapes. For him, the act of creation is a form of information processing: a way to make sense of the overwhelmingly complex world we live in.
