De Rotterdammer #16
"Pilotladder" by Roderick van Hasselt
"Not everyone realizes that maritime pilots physically board the seagoing vessels they guide in and out of port. To do so, they use a pilot ladder—a special rope ladder that can be up to 9 meters long. If the ship’s freeboard (the height from the waterline to the deck) is greater than that, a combination of a gangway and pilot ladder must be rigged to ensure safe boarding. The illustration is based on a photograph by Maurice Jacobs."
Roderick is a marine pilot and visual artist based in Rotterdam. He has been photographing since the age of 16 and started screen printing at Mesh Print Club in 2020. His inspiration is often maritime, but can come by anything that fascinates him..
