"Mama Hong" by Jeffrey de Bruin

"Thuan from Mama Hong had seen my illustration of Tai Wu and asked if I could capture their iconic Vietnamese spring roll stand. On a drizzly morning, I made a series of detailed sketches on location. Sketching on-site lets you truly experience the atmosphere—the bustling crowd, the scent of spring rolls, and the city pigeons and seagulls waiting for their moment. Later, I was invited for a private tour of their kitchen in Berkel, where I got to make and eat an oversized spring roll. Thuan immediately spotted the ‘marching pigeon’ in my illustration—a YouTube meme he’s a big fan of. Coincidentally, a cousin of my best friend turned out to be a friend of his as well. One of those moments when Rotterdam suddenly feels like a small village."
