De Rotterdammer #01
"Wandelen met Luke" by Gözde Eyce
On the cover, that’s me and my dog Luke in front of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, where we took our first walk in the city. The Sylvette statue in my illustration is a collaboration between Pablo Picasso and Norwegian artist Carl Nesjar, named after Sylvette David, who served as Picasso’s muse in the 1950s. In the 1960s, Nesjar developed a sandblasting technique for creating large-scale concrete sculptures, which enabled Picasso to transform his two-dimensional drawings of Sylvette into a monumental, three-dimensional form. Sylvette is now on Westersingel 83.
