"The House of Succulents" by María Castelló Solbes

“At the end of a winding path, after crossing a couple of small bridges over the brook, leaving behind a collection of oaks and other arboreal beauties, plus a good handful of shrubs of various genera, you will come across an almost hidden gem: the House of Succulents (also known as the Desert greenhouse) in the Trompenburg gardens. Trompengurg lies on the edge of Rotterdam’s city center, in Kralingen, and is also acknowledged as museum and municipal monument: a true oasis for plant lovers. I always love to visit botanical gardens. There is something that attracts me immensely about this idea of collecting plants. And greenhouses are the epitome of that sense of collection, displaying and preserving these green treassures for the visitors. They act as showcase devices in a way, but also as refuge once you are in. From the outside, you might even be mistaken as part of the collection.“

María Castelló Solbes is an illustrator and designer currently based in Rotterdam. Before that, she lived, studied, and worked in Madrid, Barcelona, and Berlin. She has worked mostly in editorial illustration for various printed and digital media, but also on book covers, illustrated maps, or vinyl record covers. She has a few recurring obsessions. Mainly: plants, maps and people. And all combinations of the mentioned.
