De Rotterdammer #41

"Blaakse Bos" by Pepijn Berghout

“The 'Blaakse Bos' by Piet Blom is a great example of Dutch Structuralism, built directly above a major traffic artery. From a very young age, I was fascinated by the “tree houses” and by how anyone could be mad enough to tilt and rotate a home in such a way while still keeping it habitable.

After studying architecture and analysing the design with a professional eye, my fascination with Piet Blom’s grids and spatial systems only grew. As a Rotterdammer, I still enjoy occasionally wandering through this geometric forest. The contrast between the chaotic, bustling ground level and the almost idyllic, quiet urban life beneath the canopy of the Cube Houses remains remarkable.“

Pepijn Berghout is a Rotterdam based illustrator and infographic designer. After studying architecture at the TU Delft and working as an architect for a number of years, circumstances conspired to make him switch to a career as an independent illustrator. He loves drawing everything that pops in his head but sensibly specializes in infographics, technical and spatial illustration.
